Hospice comes with a lot of uncertainty. Below are some of the most common questions families and providers ask us. For a full list, visit our dedicated FAQ page.
What is hospice care?
Hospice is a type of care focused on comfort, dignity, and quality of life for people with a life-limiting illness. It provides medical, emotional, and spiritual support for both the patient and their family, wherever they call home.
Who pays for hospice?
For most patients, hospice care is covered in full by Medicare Part A under the Medicare Hospice Benefit. Medicaid and most private insurance plans also cover hospice services. Our team can help verify coverage before care begins.
Where does hospice care take place?
James River Home Health & Hospice provides care wherever your loved one lives, in a private home, assisted living facility, or skilled nursing facility. Care comes to the patient, not the other way around.
Who will visit my loved one and how often?
Your care team includes nurses, aides, a social worker, a chaplain, and a physician, all coordinated around your loved one’s individual plan of care. Visit frequency is based on patient need, and our team is reachable around the clock between scheduled visits.
Is James River Home Health & Hospice available on nights and weekends?
Yes. Our team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays.
Volunteers are an important part of the hospice team. Whether you are a student, a retiree, or simply someone who wants to give back, there are meaningful ways to support patients and families in your community.
James River Hospice works closely with volunteers to match the right person to the right opportunity, based on personality, availability, and the needs of our patients.
We are here whenever you are ready. Whether you are just starting to explore options or you need care to begin right away, our team is one call away. There is no pressure and no wrong time to reach out.
